LISTEN: This Day in History

This morning Shawna, Chris, and I had a look back at some of the famous people born on, and events that have happened on April the 3rd’s of the past. Here’s how it sounded on the show…

On the Birthday front Wayne Newton is 76. Us kids from the 80’s probably remember his career resurrection in this scene in, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

Also celebrating Birthdays …. Mick Mars of Motley Crue is 62. Alec Baldwin is 60 today. And Eddie Murphy is 57.

Mick Mars from Motley Crue performs at Le Zenith on June 18, 2012 in Paris, France. The Motley Crue concert in Estevan, Sask. on Saturday was interrupted after a fan rushed the stage, knocking over Mars.

TV Guide’s first ever issue sold on this day in 1953 for the low, low price of 15 cents.

TV Guide Canada, which began publishing in Canada in 1953, is shutting down.

On this day in 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King gave this famous speech. Tragically, it would be his last …

… Dr. King would be assassinated by James Earl Ray the very next day in Memphis, Tennessee. This means tomorrow will mark the 50th Anniversary of one the most important figures of the 20th Century, and in fact in all of human history ……

On a lighter note, the original Star Trek was cancelled one year later in 1969.

And finally, the VERY first cell phone call was made in New York City on this day all the way back in 1973. If you hadn’t already done so, listen to the show clip at the top to hear just how incredibly the cell phone’s proliferation into our lives in just 45 years.
