You can’t deny that the late Ray Emery was a great goaltender. He was part of some great Ottawa and Philadelphia teams and also won the Cup with Chicago in 2013. For some reason, however, my favourite Ray Emery moment happens to be the time he got into a fight with Buffalo Sabres goalie Martin Biron. Goalie fights are a rarity and the hockey equivalent to seeing a unicorn – but this was a good one and it was a heated playoff series between Ottawa and Buffalo that year which even saw a near brawl between coaches Bryan Murray and Lindy Ruff. Not only did Biron go down quickly, Emery had a smile on his face and then entertained scraps from Peters almost immediately afterwards.
That smile. Ray Emery was known as a character and a fun guy to have as a friend or as a team mate. He for sure will be missed and it’s sad that we lost him at the age of 35. RIP Ray.
