Said the Whale, “UnAmerican”
Single (Hidden Pony Records)
Recommended If You Like: A west coast version of Hollerado and Sam Roberts
It’s been about a year since the last album, As Long As Your Eyes are Wide, the band has been gearing up with some new material with some intimate performances for fans. They want everyone to know that this song isn’t about hating America but instead is about distancing oneself from the awful rhetoric that seems to have become the status quo under Donald Trump.
Dead Soft, “Kill Me”
New Emotion EP (Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: Grungey Vancouver punks
Fun fact: The title of the EP is taken from a line in the Eurthymics’ “Here Comes the Rain Again” when Annie Lennox sings “Falling on my head like a new emotion.” There’s no release date for this one yet, but it’s coming. We’ll be sure to hear new material when the band plays the Opera House on December 1.
RIYL: Smiths, Cure, Arcade Fire
Introducing Andrew Beg, a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Toronto who loves everything from shoegaze to jangle-pop. He’s already done some work with Tim Oxford of Arkells and has ambitions of working with producer Stephen Street.
HAERTS, “No Love for the Wild”
No Love for the Wild (Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: St. Vincent, Washed Out, Young Galaxy
They’re from Munich, live in Brooklyn and are signed to Toronto’s Arts & Crafts. This single from their second album is about “the outcry in the moment in which you lose faith in that kind of love and the hope to be proven wrong.” Sounds like the soundtrack to having a good cry, then.
Maggie Rogers, “Light On”
Heard in a Past Life (Capitol)
RIYL: Electro melancholy
You might remember a single from Maggie called “Alaska” that became slightly viral back in 2016 after a performance during a class at New York University made guest Pharrell Williams cry. That resulted in an EP entitled Now That Light is Fading and is now followed up by a full album, co-produced by Harry Styles collaborator Kid Harpoon. Is this Next Big Thing territory?
